Project 08

Aurora, a sequel to Mirage. Karmuel Young travels from one extreme to another, going from the red-hot Sahara Desert to the gelid glaciers of Hornafjörður. Taking inspirations from the unworldly polar lights and Young’s own dream-like experience at the Blue Lagoon, where waters become one with the serene blue sky and steam dances with the clouds above, the collection alludes to René Magritte’s surrealist masterpieces, seamlessly fusing Young and the Belgian artist’s perspectives of reality.

Numerous paintings of Magritte, such as the renowned Galconda and The Son of Man, see men dressed in dark overcoats and bowler hats, reflecting his sartorial choices at that time and the influence of his tailor-textile merchant father. Modernising this traditional gentlemen’s attire, Young reinvents everyday silhouettes with suit fabric sourced from Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti and juxtaposes formal and casual garments to blur the boundaries between the two distinct styles. Aviator Jacket made from striped wool-cashmere blend, and Trucker Jacket as well as Five-Pocket Trousers rendered in denim effect wool traced with visible stitching. Trapezium XY-Plane Shirt and Calfskin Leather Tie are paired with fluid Giant Hoodie and Cuboid Sweatpants.

Apart from the aforementioned tie, Project 08 incorporates a series of leather objects. A decorative egg, cigarette case and drawstring hood. Young gives them an utterly different texture, just as Magritte places objects together with words that don’t describe them in Key to Dreams. Making the familiar unfamiliar, the assemblage also features a line-up of sterling silver jewellery created in collaboration with MOUCCM, reproducing the exaggerated proportions of the comb, glass and other props in Personal Values. Sculptural antitragus Ear Cuff is downscaled into a helix Ear Cuff and upsized into a Bangle as well.

Rings are accented with iridescent moonstones reminiscent of the ever-changing northern lights, while the glacier green and arctic blue tones of Icelandic fjords colour the padded Bulk Bomber Jacket veiled with a frost-esque translucent overlay and the glow-in-the-dark, waterproof Trench Coat respectively, both topped off with long goat fur gloves for a subarctic touch. As if coated with a thin layer of ice, the Re-Edition Levi’s 501 Jeans are overprinted in contrasting white, revealing the intricate inner structure to hint at its crystalline appearance; whereas the Square Overshirt is constructed with a moulded panel and tight stitching outlining the key detailing in hopes of freezing the epochal shirt design.
