Project 07 looks into the resemblance between heat mirages in deserts and surrealist artworks. The two inspirations see peculiar objects appearing unexpectedly in extraneous settings, which perfectly reinforce the brand’s signature juxtaposition between natural and synthetic elements. Pairing Trapezium Shirts with Cuboid Wide Pants to form the gentleman’s attire found in René Magritte’s masterpieces, these looks are accessorised with horse hair ties and Python Leather Belts that starkly contrast with metallic stud detailing and sterling silver jewelleries from the label’s collaboration with MOUCCM.
From cotton-silk blend knit to gauze and coated linen, this season’s choice of fabric is characterised by the dry, sand-esque texture derived from traditional desert apparel. And just like the surrealist artists, Karmuel Young gives new definitions to certain everyday pieces. For instance, straight jeans are crafted from a leather-like, glossy acetate satin and wool pants are graced with a five-pocket design and yellow stitching of classic denim garments.
The Red Square Overshirt and Double Layered Pants recreate Salvador Dalí’s lauded The Elephants. Warm tones of the top recall the breath-taking Spanish sunset while the segmented bottoms mimic the multijointed legs of the majestic animal for an engrossing trompe l’oeil effect. Illusory motifs can also be seen on the Strong Arm Shirt Coat. Taking cues from Agnes Martin’s abstract expressionist pencil grids, the oversized outerwear features seemingly-neat hand-draw stripes whose asymmetry can only be spotted up close, whereas the carry-over XYZ cuts are further emboldened with widened protruding seams as well as with spray painted trims to spotlight the unique, handcrafted impression.
